Bosley’s Secret to Losing 33 Pounds!
I remember the first day we met, it was a Friday afternoon and a beautiful, clear sunny day. It was the first appointment with my new Chiropractor, and I was pleasantly surprised, when I was greeted by a lovable, good natured, nine year old Golden Retriever named Bosley. His Dad, Rick (my Doctor) radiated vitality and it was obvious that exercise and wholesome, healthy foods were part of his own holistic lifestyle.
We hit it off immediately, (as most pet lovers do) and began to share our stories about how we got our pets and how much we loved them and all the great things they do for us. It was at that point that I decided I needed to express my concerns about Rick’s wonderful dog. Bosley was extremely overweight, and his large frame had already become an issue and was putting a lot of stress on his hind quarters. It was sad to see an otherwise healthy nine year old dog, kind of lumbering along and had trouble sitting up straight.
Of course I had to ask what kind of food he was eating, but it was pretty obvious that dry food was the culprit. See, I believe that dry food (in addition to all the extreme processing) typically contains a lot of high calorie- “carb” laden fillers (like corn, wheat, rice and potatoes). This makes great economic sense to the pet food maker, but wreaks total havoc with so many pets in this country. Word’s out that there’s an epidemic of overweight pets in the US, and statistics say about 70% are headed down the road to joint problems, diabetes and even organ failure!
As part of my payment for a wonderful Chiropractic adjustment, I handed Rick a copy of my book The Whole Pet Diet and hoped it would resonate with him. By the end of the weekend, Rick was a changed man. He called me on Sunday and to say how optimistic he was about Bosley’s future, what he had learned from my book about food and the effects it has on our pets. He expressed how awful he felt about giving Bosley dry food for such a long time. Of course, I assured him he was still a great Dad and gave him the encouragement to start making changes and begin cooking for Bosley immediately. Like so many other people I’ve met through the years, Rick understood that “food is the foundation of life” for humans, but he never made the same correlation to Bosley.
It didn’t take long to get the reports. Bosley loved his new stew of course, and the pounds just melted away. Week after week, Bosley began to improve; he could run and jump and play again, and Rick couldn’t believe how much more vibrant and youthful Bosley became. He could actually outrun pretty much any other dog at the park. In under two months, Bosley went from 108 pounds down to a trim and fit 75 pounds! There is no mystery. Great Food, Great Health, Great Life!
