Pumpkin and Liver Treats by Rikki-Lee Schroder – Holistic Pet Chef
Rikki-Lee has been an extraordinary Holistic Pet Chef for nearly a decade. She lives with her two lucky pups, Tiger Lily & Alaska, in their wonderful home in South Africa. Rikki loves to use ingredients when and where they are seasonally grown and available. They are the most delicious that way. Thank you Rikki-Lee for all you do.
4 cups chickpea flour
1 cup potato flour
1/3 cup tapioca flour
1 teaspoon turmeric
2 teaspoons thyme
2 teaspoons parsley
1 teaspoon kelp
1 cup pureed pumpkin
1 teaspoon tomato paste
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 cup finely chopped liver
1/2 cup grated carrots
1. Preheat oven to 325˚F
2. Lightly cook the liver in a pan on medium heat for two minutes on both sides and then let it cool
3. Combine all flours, turmeric, thyme, parsley, and kelp in large bowl. Mix well. Combine remaining ingredients in separate bowl.
4. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients. Carefully mix in the wet ingredients (including the crumbled liver) until a soft dough is formed.
5. Knead dough on lightly floured surface and then roll to approximately ½ an inch thick.
6. Use cookie cutters to cut out whatever shapes your pet likes and then place them on a lined baking tray. (Notice Rikki-Lee’s adorable dachshund shaped cookies)
7. Bake for approximately 20 minutes or until golden brown. Turn off the oven and leave inside for another 10 minutes.
8. Remove from oven and allow to cool. Store in an airtight container.
Not only are these super healthy for your dogs…but we know they’re going to do back flips over the taste!

thanks for the recipe! I have been wanting to make my own baked flour based treats. I wonder of chickpea, potatoe, and tapioca flours are so readily available in USA–Ricki-Lee lives in Africa.
Andi, I use your recipies ever since I discovered your book at our local library in 2007.
vyorka liver treats are fabulous, and great training tool. My dogs love them.
I love making spots stew every week, and now I look forward to your Doc’s line of food. After you sold Halo to whoever, I never bothered to buy it because you no longer owned or controlled how it was made.
Sydney, Levi, and I love you Andi and all your staff. Thank you for what you do.
Hi Mary, Your words are so sweet! Thank you for your trust in me and what I do. I’m so glad that you love the recipes and the book is making a wonderful impact on you and your kids. Please do try the new products – they can be a wonderful addition to what you already do. Please send Syndney and Levi a GREAT BIG HUG from me and especially back to you! Keep me posted on how you love the line! xoxoxo
I make this once per month and our dog loves it. We also make it to give as a gift to our friends and their dogs love it. It’s healthy and nutritious for our loving canines. Thank you for sharing. If we are unable to find chicken liver, then we substitute with beef. 🙂
BRAVO! What a lovely friend you are to the pets! xox
How long can these treats be stored at room temperature?
Hi Kelly, You always want to treat their food the same way you would treat your own. I like to refrigerate everything, because I live in Florida. Just makes it safer and you don’t want to have any meat sitting out on your counter that could spoil. xox Andi
is there a substitute you can use instead of pumpkin as it is out of season, could you use squash.
Hi Shirley, Squash would be just fine! Glad you’re thinking on your feet there! xoxo
Is it mandatory to use ALL of the ingredients? After all, this is a treat. My rescue min pin is 10 years old and has recurring yeast infections in his ears. I hesitate to give him any flour, yeast, potato or any cargos to feed the yeast.
Thank you in advance Andi for your comments.
hi Adrienne, If your little Min Pin is “sensitive” to any of the ingredients in this recipe, I suggest that you use/or find one that will suit him better. I LOVE Voyko’s Paw Lickin Liver treats. Perhaps that one is better! xox
My dog is allergic to salmon, white fish and salmon oil. It there something I can use instead as the salmon oil is a big part of the Best in Coat recipe?
Most pets do very well with Salmon and it could be that your dog is not “allergic” really to salmon, but possibly has been confused with a poor quality pet food or snack that contained some kind of salmon like substance in it. I REALLY like the salmon. However… we also use COD and if you are really convinced or nervous to try the salmon.. then just omit it from the recipe and please do keep us posted on your success.
Is this recipe written for fresh or dried herbs & spices? I know dried herbs /spices are stronger than fresh, usually 1tsp. dried equals 1 tablespoon fresh.
If you sign up… You will get it when we publish the next issue!
Can the pumpkin and liver treats be put in a mold instead of using cookie cutters?
Hi Cathy, Do whatever makes it easiest for you. As long as they’re getting the great nutrition… it doesn’t matter! xox Andi
